چکیده

The influences of polymerization temperature, initiator and monomer concentrations, ionic strength of the aqueous phase, as well as ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDM) comonomer, on the kinetics of the emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and on the properties of the resulting poly(methy1 methacrylate) (PMMA) lattices were studied. The polymerizations were carried out using potassium persulfate (KPS) as the initiator. Monodisperse PMMA lattices with particle diameters varying between 0.14-0.37 pm and polymer molecular weights of the order 0.4 X lo6 to 1.2 X lo6 g/ mol were prepared. The initial rate of polymerization increases with increasing temperature, KPS-MMA mole ratio, EGDM content, or with decreasing ionic strength of the aqueous phase. It was shown that the bead size can be limited by reducing the monomer concentration or by using the cross-linking agent EGDM. The ionic strength of the aqueous phase has a dominant effect on final particle diameter and polymer molecular weight. The uniformity of the latex particles increases as the temperature increases or as the initiator concentration decreases. The experimental results can be reasonably interpreted by the homogeneous nucleation mechanism of the emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization of MMA.

Mini-emulsion preparation, kinetics of reaction and physical properties of acrylic terpolymer lattices

In this study, stable lattices of terpolymer butyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, and styrene were synthesized by a mini-emulsion polymerization technique using tert-butyl hydroperoxide TBHP/Fe2 /ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid/sodium formaldehyde sulfoxylate redox initiators at room temperature, and the kinetics of the reaction were studied. The reaction rate was obtained from periodic samplin...

Emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization produces highly charged, monodisperse particles for near infrared photonic crystals.

We have developed emulsifier-free, emulsion polymerization recipes for the synthesis of highly charged, monodisperse latex particles of diameters between 500 and 1100 nm. These latexes consist of poly[styrene-(co-2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)] spherical particles whose surfaces are functionalized with sulfate and carboxylic acid groups. These highly charged, monodisperse particles readily self-a...

Synthesis of Polybutadiene Nanoparticles via Emulsion Polymerization: Effect of Reaction Temperature on the Polymer Microstructure, Particle Size and Reaction Kinetics

Polybutadiene nanoparticles were synthesized via batch emulsion polymerization of butadiene in the presence of potassium persulfate, disproportionate rosinate potassium cation and t-dodecyl mercaptane as initiator, emulsifier and chain transfer agent, respectively. Polymerization reaction was performed at different temperatures (60, 70 and 80 °C). Conversion was measured at the various time int...

Competitive particle growth at different conditions of oligo-micelle formation in hydro-alcoholic solution of anionic double-chain emulsifier via batch emulsion polymerization of vinyl chloride

The condition of oligo-micelle formation of sodium di-isodecyl sulfosuccinate (SDIDS) emulsifier in hydroalcoholic solutions is used to study particle formation of vinyl chloride emulsion polymerization in a batch reactor. The change on micellization behavior was investigated by critical micelle concentration (CMC) and zeta potential parameters. To detect the occurrence of secondary nucleation ...

Gene delivery efficacy of polyethyleneimine-introduced chitosan shell/poly(methyl methacrylate) core nanoparticles for rat mesenchymal stem cells.

This work investigated polyethyleneimine (PEI)-introduced chitosan (CS) (CS/PEI) nanoparticles as non-viral carrier of plasmid DNA for rat mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). The CS/PEI nanoparticles were prepared by the emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization of methyl methacrylate monomer induced by a small amount of t-butyl hydroperxide in the presence of different concentrations of PEI mixed wit...
